Psalms: The Redeemed Tell Their Story, and the Rejected Stone (Psalms 107–118)

Scripture: Berean Standard Bible

Psalm 107
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;his loving devotion endures forever.Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemyand gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path to a city in which to dwell. They were hungry and thirsty;their soul fainted within them. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them on a straight pathto reach a city where they could live.Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loving devotionand his wonders to the sons of men.For he satisfies the thirstyand fills the hungry with good things.
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and chains, because they rebelled against the words of Godand despised the counsel of the Most High.He humbled their hearts with hard labor;they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of deathand broke away their chains.Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loving devotionand his wonders to the sons of men.For he has broken down the gates of bronzeand cut through the bars of iron.
Fools, in their rebellious ways, and through their iniquities, suffered affliction. They loathed all foodand drew near to the gates of death. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent forth his word and healed them;he rescued them from the Pit.Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loving devotionand his wonders to the sons of men.Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgivingand declare his works with rejoicing.
Others went out to sea in ships, conducting trade on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the LORD,and his wonders in the deep. For he spoke and raised a tempestthat lifted the waves of the sea. They mounted up to the heavens, then sunk to the depths;their courage melted in their anguish. They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and all their skill was useless.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. They rejoiced in the silence, and he guided them to the harbor they desired.Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loving devotionand his wonders to the sons of men.Let them exalt him in the assembly of the peopleand praise him in the council of the elders.
He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water into thirsty ground, and fruitful land into fields of salt, because of the wickedness of its dwellers. He turns a desert into pools of waterand a dry land into flowing springs. He causes the hungry to settle there, that they may establish a city in which to dwell. They sow fields and plant vineyardsthat yield a fruitful harvest. He blesses them, and they multiply greatly;he does not let their herds diminish.
When they are decreased and humbledby oppression, evil, and sorrow,he pours out contempt on the noblesand makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. But he lifts the needy from afflictionand increases their families like flocks. The upright see and rejoice, and all iniquity shuts its mouth.
Let him who is wise pay heed to these thingsand consider the loving devotion of the LORD.
Psalm 108

A song. A Psalm of David.

My heart is steadfast, O God;I will sing and make music with all my being.Awake, O harp and lyre!I will awaken the dawn.I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations;I will sing your praises among the peoples. For your loving devotion extends beyond the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;may your glory cover all the earth.Respond and save us with your right hand, that your beloved may be delivered.
God has spoken from his sanctuary:“I will triumph!I will parcel out Shechemand apportion the Valley of Succoth.Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine;Ephraim is my helmet, Judah is my scepter.Moab is my washbasin;upon Edom I toss my sandal;over Philistia I shout in triumph.”
Who will bring me to the fortified city?Who will lead me to Edom?Have you not rejected us, O God?Will you no longer march out, O God, with our armies?Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless. With God we will perform with valor, and he will trample our enemies.
Psalm 109

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

O God of my praise,be not silent. For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me;they speak against me with lying tongues. They surround me with hateful wordsand attack me without cause. In return for my love they accuse me,but I am a man of prayer. They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
Set over him a wicked man;let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayer be regarded as sin.May his days be few;may another take his position.May his children be fatherlessand his wife a widow.May his children wander as beggars, seeking sustenance far from their ruined homes.May the creditor seize all he owns, and strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.May there be no one to extend kindness to him,and no one to favor his fatherless children.May his descendants be cut off;may their name be blotted out from the next generation.May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD,and the sin of his mother never be blotted out.May their sins always remain before the LORD,that he may cut off their memory from the earth.
For he never thought to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and brokenhearted, even to their death. The cursing that he loved, may it fall on him;the blessing in which he refused to delight, may it be far from him.The cursing that he wore like a coat, may it soak into his body like water, and into his bones like oil.May it be like a robe wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him.May this be the LORD’s reward to my accusers,to those who speak evil against me.
But you, O GOD, the Lord, deal kindly with me for the sake of your name;deliver me by the goodness of your loving devotion. For I am poor and needy;my heart is wounded within me.I am fading away like a lengthening shadow;I am shaken off like a locust. My knees are weak from fasting, and my body grows lean and gaunt.I am an object of scorn to my accusers;when they see me, they shake their heads.
Help me, O LORD my God;save me according to your loving devotion.Let them know that this is your hand, that you, O LORD, have done it.Though they curse, you will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice.May my accusers be clothed with disgrace;may they wear their shame like a robe. With my mouth I will thank the LORD profusely;I will praise him in the presence of many. For he stands at the right hand of the needy one,to save him from the condemners of his soul.
Psalm 110

A Psalm of David.

The LORD said to my Lord:“Sit at my right handuntil I make your enemiesa footstool for your feet.”
The LORD extends your mighty scepter from Zion:“Rule in the midst of your enemies.”Your people shall be willingon your day of battle.Arrayed in holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,to you belongs the dew of your youth.
The LORD has swornand will not change his mind:“You are a priest foreverin the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord is at your right hand;he will crush kings in the day of his wrath. He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead;he will crush the leaders far and wide.He will drink from the brook by the road;therefore he will lift up his head.
Psalm 111
Hallelujah!
I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heartin the council of the upright and in the assembly.
Great are the works of the LORD;they are pondered by all who delight in them.Splendid and majestic is his work;his righteousness endures forever. He has caused his wonders to be remembered;the LORD is gracious and compassionate. He provides food for those who fear him;he remembers his covenant forever.
He has shown his people the power of his worksby giving them the inheritance of the nations. The works of his hands are truth and justice;all his precepts are trustworthy. They are upheld forever and ever, enacted in truth and uprightness. He has sent redemption to his people;he has ordained his covenant forever;holy and awesome is his name.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;all who follow his precepts gain rich understanding.
His praise endures forever!
Psalm 112
Hallelujah!
Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,who greatly delights in his commandments. His descendants will be mighty in the land;the generation of the upright will be blessed.Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.Light dawns in the darkness for the upright—for the gracious, compassionate, and righteous.
It is well with the man who is generous and lends freely, whose affairs are guided by justice.Surely he will never be shaken;the righteous man will be remembered forever. He does not fear bad news;his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.His heart is assured; he does not fear, until he looks in triumph on his foes.He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor;his righteousness endures forever;his horn will be lifted high in honor.
The wicked man will see and be grieved;he will gnash his teeth and waste away;the desires of the wicked will perish.
Psalm 113
Hallelujah!
Give praise, O servants of the LORD;praise the name of the LORD.Blessed be the name of the LORDboth now and forevermore. From where the sun rises to where it sets, the name of the LORD is praised.
The LORD is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens.Who is like the LORD our God,the One enthroned on high?He humbles himself to beholdthe heavens and the earth.
He raises the poor from the dustand lifts the needy from the dumpto seat them with nobles, with the princes of his people. He settles the barren woman in her homeas a joyful mother to her children.
Hallelujah!
Psalm 114
When Israel departed from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue,Judah became God’s sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.
The sea observed and fled;the Jordan turned back;the mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. Why was it, O sea, that you fled,O Jordan, that you turned back,O mountains, that you skipped like rams,O hills, like lambs?
Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool, the flint into a fountain of water!
Psalm 115
Not to us, O LORD, not to us,but to your name be the glory, because of your loving devotion, because of your faithfulness.
Why should the nations say,“Where is their God?”
Our God is in heaven;he does as he pleases.
Their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. They have mouths, but cannot speak;they have eyes, but cannot see;they have ears, but cannot hear;they have noses, but cannot smell;they have hands, but cannot feel;they have feet, but cannot walk;they cannot even clear their throats. Those who make them become like them,as do all who trust in them.
O Israel, trust in the LORD!He is their help and shield.O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD!He is their help and shield. You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD!He is their help and shield. The LORD is mindful of us;he will bless us.He will bless the house of Israel;he will bless the house of Aaron;he will bless those who fear the LORD—small and great alike.
May the LORD give you increase, both you and your children.May you be blessed by the LORD,the Maker of heaven and earth.
The highest heavens belong to the LORD,but the earth he has given to mankind. It is not the dead who praise the LORD,nor any who descend into silence. But it is we who will bless the LORD,both now and forevermore.
Hallelujah!
Psalm 116
I love the LORD, for he has heard my voice—my appeal for mercy.Because he has inclined his ear to me,I will call on him as long as I live.
The ropes of death entangled me;the anguish of Sheol overcame me;I was confronted by trouble and sorrow. Then I called on the name of the LORD:“O LORD, deliver my soul!”
The LORD is gracious and righteous;our God is full of compassion. The LORD preserves the simplehearted;I was helpless, and he saved me.Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.For you have delivered my soul from death,my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.
I will walk before the LORDin the land of the living.I believed, therefore I said,“I am greatly afflicted.”In my alarm I said,“All men are liars!”
How can I repay the LORDfor all his goodness to me?I will lift the cup of salvationand call on the name of the LORD.I will fulfill my vows to the LORDin the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the LORDis the death of his saints.Truly, O LORD, I am your servant;I am your servant, the son of your maidservant;you have broken my bonds.
I will offer to you a sacrifice of thanksgivingand call on the name of the LORD.I will fulfill my vows to the LORDin the presence of all his people,in the courts of the LORD’s house,in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Hallelujah!
Psalm 117
Praise the LORD, all you nations!Extol him, all you peoples! For great is his loving devotion toward us,and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Hallelujah!
Psalm 118
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;his loving devotion endures forever.Let Israel say,“His loving devotion endures forever.”Let the house of Aaron say,“His loving devotion endures forever.”Let those who fear the LORD say,“His loving devotion endures forever.”
In my distress I called to the LORD,and he answered and set me free. The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?The LORD is on my side; he is my helper. Therefore I will look in triumph on those who hate me.It is better to take refuge in the LORDthan to trust in man.It is better to take refuge in the LORDthan to trust in princes.
All the nations surrounded me,but in the name of the LORD I cut them off. They surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off. They swarmed around me like bees, but they were extinguished like burning thorns;in the name of the LORD I cut them off.I was pushed so hard I was falling, but the LORD helped me.The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.
Shouts of joy and salvation resound in the tents of the righteous:“The right hand of the LORD performs with valor! The right hand of the LORD is exalted! The right hand of the LORD performs with valor!”I will not die, but I will liveand proclaim what the LORD has done. The LORD disciplined me severely, but he has not given me over to death.
Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter and give thanks to the LORD.This is the gate of the LORD;the righteous shall enter through it.I will give you thanks, for you have answered me,and you have become my salvation. The stone the builders rejectedhas become the cornerstone. This is from the LORD,and it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the LORD has made;we will rejoice and be glad in it.
O LORD, save us, we pray.We beseech you, O LORD, cause us to prosper!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD.From the house of the LORD we bless you.The LORD is God;he has made his light to shine upon us.Bind the festal sacrifice with cordsto the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will give you thanks. You are my God, and I will exalt you.Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;his loving devotion endures forever.
